Bearings are used to transfer loads between parts of buildings and to allow these parts to move relative to each other. An important type of bearings in building constructions are roller bearings. They transfer loads without constraint from the superstructure to the substructure. Single roller bearings allow for transfer of displacement perpendicular to the roller axis, and for transfer of rotation around the roller axis.


The key element of a roller bearing is the roller. The adjacent plates must have the same nominal strength and hardness as the roller. […] Where contact faces are made from corrosive materials, special design and construction measures need to be taken to prevent corrosion. […] At the centre of the bearing plates, there is a mechanical stop mechanism in the form of a guide bar transferring horizontal forces parallel to the roller axis. […]
